The Story of Us - Part 13
After my FHE shenanigans, I was very nervous about being around or talking to Josh. I could almost guarantee he had seen through my plan, and I wasn't sure if he liked it or not, and so I didn't want to do anything too crazy that might scare him away. But to my surprise, despite the awkwardness that had happened, things were pretty good between us! Josh and I ended up talking, chatting on Facebook, or seeing each other in person almost every day, and it was often him who would start a conversation. It usually would only be for a little bit since we both (mainly me) had such busy schedules, but it was still something.
At the end of that second week of the semester, Josh and his roommate Todd came over to my house so I could see if I could wrap his ankle (I had recently taken a sports medicine class). I wasn't able to since I realized that I didn't have the right kind of tape, but they ended up staying and chatting for a while anyway. I asked Josh why he needed his ankle wrapped, and he told me his Ultimate Frisbee team was playing in a tournament down in Utah that weekend. I was also going to be down in Utah that weekend, and so without really thinking about it, and being surprisingly calm about it, I told Josh that I was going to be down in Utah as well, but that I would have time to come watch him play. Josh seemed surprised, but he told me that would be great and sent me the address and times of his games.
After Josh and Todd left, I was surprised when a few minutes later, Josh sent me a message on Facebook.
"Involves me a lot"? "Dating"?? Doesn't want to feel like he's missed something??? Is he saying what I think he's saying?? My mind and heart starting racing, but luckily we weren't talking in person, so I could take a little bit of time to construct my answers and not sound like I was freaking out. I told him that I wasn't the best at giving advice, especially about dating, but I knew what it was like to feel confused and uncertain about what steps to take. We kept chatting for a little bit, and then said goodbye until we saw each other in Utah.
Going to Utah was so much fun and was a much needed break from the craziness this semester had already brought. First, I went down to Provo to visit my old roommate Chelsea. We went up in Provo Canyon with a large group of people, and we made a campfire, roasted marshmallows, and slept under the stars in sleeping bags.
The next morning, I spent a little more time with Chelsea, and then packed up and headed up to Ogden where Josh was playing. I blasted some music and sang along during the drive, but the closer I got, the more nervous I became. What was I doing?? We're just friends, but after our conversation on Facebook, I was way more nervous about seeing him.
I arrived right before Josh's third game, and so I didn't have a ton of time to talk with him since he was doing some warm ups and such with his teammates. There were a few other girls there, but it became obvious very quickly that they were all girlfriends or wives of the other guys, which didn't help my nerves about being there. People quickly found out, though, that Josh and I were just friends, and so one guy in particular started teasing us and telling us that we should date. Oh, if only he knew...
Ultimate Frisbee is called Ultimate for a reason - it's pretty fast paced and a little hard to keep track of everything all at once. I was a little confused on the rules and what exactly was going on, but I wasn't about to say no to watching a bunch of really in shape guys run around :)
Within the first 5 minutes of the game, Josh made a pretty impressive dive to catch a frisbee. One of those almost Superman-like ones where he was almost parallel to the ground, with his right arm stretched out in front of him. He hit the ground pretty hard, but got back up and kept running. It wasn't long though before he was subbed out of the game because his right shoulder was hurting him pretty bad. He tried stretching it, throwing a frisbee, but it became really apparent that he was not going to be able to play. Josh came over after a little bit and sat by me to watch his team play, but he was so mad at himself, I didn't quite know what to say. We ended up sitting in (at least for me) an awkward silence for the remainder of that game and the next. Every now and then I'd ask a question about the game, and Josh would answer, but he mainly sat in a frustrated silence. By the middle of the last game, I was starting to regret coming. Josh clearly wasn't in a chatting mood, and I thought I saw him text Tiffany, which made me pretty upset.
I'm really bad, though, at knowing when the appropriate time to leave is, and so I ended up going with Josh and his team to Chick-fil-a for dinner. Josh was kind enough to buy my dinner for me since I realized that I had forgotten my wallet in Idaho. We chatted and such, but Josh was still acting very aloof, and so I was more than happy to leave and head to my friend's reception.
Madeline and Casey's reception was so much fun because I got to see several good friends I had made at EFY that I hadn't seen in months. It took all the stress and awkardness of that day away in an instant. I got to tell everyone about my plans for a mission, and I was so happy!
That night at my grandparents' house, though, I was surprised when I got a text from Josh thanking me for coming to his games.

Josh went on to ask for my opinion about whether or not he should stay in Rexburg for the summer, since he was technically off-track for the semester, or if he should go back to Arkansas and find a job for the summer. I had barely gotten my response back to him, when he sent a couple more messages that stunned me a little bit.
