The Story of Us - Part 4
When I got the message from Josh on Facebook, I knew I needed to say yes. I tried to do my best to give (most) guys at least one date as a courtesy, and plus Josh was a friend and I didn't want to hurt our friendship by saying no.
So I sent Josh a text saying that going to dinner sometime would be good, which he quickly replied back to. We decided that dinner on Friday (February 15th) worked great (I was so relieved he didn't try to do a cheesy Valentine's Day first date thing).
On Valentine's Day, though, I was sitting at home later in the evening, when I got a text from Josh asking what I was up to. I told him I was just doing some homework, and he asked if I wanted to take a break and go get some frozen yogurt. I honestly was tempted to say no because I was already in my pajamas, but he said the magic words "frozen yogurt", so I said yes.
We headed over to Kiwi Loco and it surprised me how easy it was to talk to him about pretty much anything from what instruments we had played in high school (violin for me and trumpet for Josh) to what we were planning on doing after college (nurse at a children's hospital for me and something medical for Josh). It was again weird to me how much we had in common and how much we could connect when I really didn't want to. But I still enjoyed talking with him and came back home more confused than before.
The next day, Josh picked me up for our date and first we headed over to Sammy's and I was super nervous, and not just because I was on a date. There was something Josh didn't know about me yet and I was really nervous about telling him, but I knew I needed to soon. See, the thing was, I had started my mission papers only a week or so before. Starting over the Christmas break, I had started getting the impression that I should go on a mission for my church.
**A little explanation: a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a voluntary service performed by young adult men and women, for a period of 18 months for girls and 2 years for boys. Those serving devote every minute of every day to sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ to others around the world. It is more of an obligation for the young men to go, but young women may also go if they have the desire to do so. However, you cannot be engaged or married (unless you are an older couple who serve together).
So anyway, back to the date. We first went over to a local burger place called Sammy's, which had surprisingly few people for being a Friday night. After getting our burgers, we went over to the adjoining room where there were some school desks to sit and eat at. We started to eat and talk, but not too long after we started, a band started to rehearse and to a sound check for a concert they were putting on there later that night and so Josh and I couldn't hear each other at all. After a few minutes of awkward silence due to the loud music, we decided to take the rest of our food back out to the truck to finish so we could continue talking.
While we were sitting and talking, Josh asked me what I was planning on doing after I graduated in July. I thought that was odd because he had just asked me that same question just the night before at Kiwi Loco. I knew I should tell him about my plans for a mission and I didn't want to surprise him with it later, so I figured, I'll tell him now. So I said, "Well, I'm planning on going on a mission."
He was obviously a little shocked, and said, "Really?" I explained that I had just started my mission papers just a week or so ago. It was apparent he had not expected that answer to come out of my mouth, but said he thought that was awesome and that I would be a great missionary. It was a little awkward for a few minutes as Josh was kind of processing the information I had just given him and I was starting to wonder if telling him that so early in our date had been such a good idea.
But we went on to the second thing Josh had planned for the evening: glow-in-the-dark miniature golf at Fat Cats. We kept talking as we played, and I tried my best to not make a total fool of myself (I'm realllly bad at any forms of golf).
Afterwards when Josh took me home, I thought that things seemed pretty ok between us and we could still be good friends. My feelings towards him still hadn't changed - he was a great guy but I couldn't really see anything more than us just being friends. And hopefully me telling him I was going on a mission would prevent him from asking me on another date.
But little did I know that Josh is not someone to give up quite so easily.

It's going good!
